Harry Vardon 1870-1937
Born in the Channel Islands, Jersey and moved to England at the age of 20 to pursue a career in golf. He worked as a greenskeeper at a Yorkshire club while aggressively honing skills that would soon catapult him to become the Golf's first superstar since the young Tom Morris. He went on to win six Open Championships (still unbroken today) 62 tournament wins that included 14 in a row (another unbroken record)! He suffered from tuberculosis and many commentators felt his prolonged absence from the game prevented him from winning even more tournaments. He was known for his exceptional accuracy and control with all clubs and is best remembered today for the famous Vardon Grip, invented by Scottish amateur Johnny Laidlay, but brought to the public 's attention by Vardon and today is favored by 90% of all golfers throughout the world.
